The half lily was added by Charles VII in 1449 to thank the city for its help in the fight against the English. On June 26, 1786, King Louis XVI stopped off at Mantes-la-Jolie during his tour of Normandy, which included visits to Le Havre, Caen and Cherbourg, to see how the construction of the military port was progressing. It is possible that it was on this occasion that this esponton was worn by one of the city's militia officers. After the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, a committee was set up to administer Mantes-la-Jolie. It was made up of 6 representatives of the nobility, 6 of the clergy and 6 of the commune. In these turbulent times, it formed a militia with 4 companies of 40 men each, and set up a guardhouse in the town hall, an armed body that would become the national guard. This corps may also have used this esponton model.
