The Emperor decided that he would be godfather and the Empress godmother to all legitimate children born on this day, March 16, 1856. A gilded silver water glass was sometimes offered by Empress Eugénie during her travels in the provinces to immortalize this link. These glasses were of two types: either goblet-shaped (timbale) or, more rarely, stemmed. A vermeil pedestal glass, engraved with the same decoration, was presented by Count d'Abel de Malibran to the Musée de l'Armée in Paris; it was published in the Revue de la Société des amis du Musée de l'Armée, 1963 supplement, pp. 8-9. This timbale was presented to the Duchamp family by Empress Eugénie and the Prince Impérial during their stay in Lyon from August 24 to 26, 1869, when they visited Corsica to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Emperor Napoleon I (1769-1821).
