France. 1852-1870 Very good condition. 91 CH This musket was invented by General Arcelin (who had transformed the flintlock armament into a percussion system) and perfected at the Manufacture Impériale de Châtellerault by a young worker named Chassepot. 108 examples were ordered by the Emperor, distributed for trial to the Empress's Dragons, the 1st Carabinier Regiment and the 1st Hussar Regiment. On June 8, 1858, the Comité d'Artillerie rejected the musket as unsuitable for service, as it produced gas jets at the start of the shot, making it dangerous for the shooter.
