CATULLE, TIBULLE et PROPERCE. - Lot 27
CATULLE, TIBULLE et PROPERCE.
Catullus, Tibullus et Propertius, ex recensione Joannis Georgii Graevii, cum notis integris... Utrecht, Rudolph a Zyll, 1680. 2 parts in a large volume in-8, fawn calf, framed with a double gilt fillet crossing at the corners, small spandrels at the corners and seeded with gilt stars, emblem with gilt crown in the center, spine decorated, gilt edges (Dutch binding of the period).
Gravius's edition of these three ancient Roman poets, with copious commentaries by Marc-Antoine Muret, Joseph Scaliger, Roberto Titi, Avantius, Johan van der Does and others. It features a handsome intaglio frontispiece. According to Brunet, this uncommon edition is part of the Variorum collection.
A copy with several old handwritten annotations in the margins, mainly cross-references.
Expensive binding, probably locally made, with an indeterminate emblem.
Handwritten bookplates: Joannes Barbeyrac 1704 (could this be the jurist of the same name, born in Béziers in 1674 and died in 1744?), and Alex. Bossuel 1728.
From the Maurice Burrus library, with his bookplate.
