PLATO. The First, Second, and Tenth Books of Justice, or Of the Republic. Four Philippics of Demosthenes. Sermon by Theodorite. Paris, Sébastien Nivelle, 1555. In-4, turned calf, double framed with three cold fillets, fleuron at the corners, three-ribbed spine underlined with cold fillets (Modern binding in the old taste). First edition of the first French translation of these three books by Plato. It was given by Loys Le Roy (1510-1577), known as Regius, professor of Greek at the Collège Royal and one of the leading Hellenists of his time. He added two texts with similar themes: the Philippics by Demosthenes and a work by Theodoritus, bishop of Cyr in Syria in the 5th century. Washed copy. Angular restoration to last 4 leaves.
