LAMMENAIS (Félicité de). Words of a believer. Paris, Renduel, 1834. In-8, half plum long-grained morocco with corners, flat spine decorated with a gilt fillet frame, untrimmed (Binding of the period). First edition. Some foxing. Attached is an autograph letter signed (F. L.), Paris, August 2, 1844, 4 pages in-12, to a friend to whom he sends his condolences for a bereavement: "After so many years of an ever-common life, even when far apart, to suddenly see these bonds broken, to feel that the order established by a will whose Wisdom we adore and by a love in ours is but a shadow". Commenting on a friend's reclusive life with the English Ladies, whose boarders can only receive guests at the gate: "As for me, I loathe gates, especially when I've been kept behind them. I've lost all my health, that is, what I had of it. I no longer have a stomach, and a stomach is strength...". He talks at length about his life and his occupations: "I miss my legs. I miss them even more than M. de Chateaubriand, it's a real pity..." etc.
