First edition of this Portuguese project for universal peace, inspired by the ideas of the Abbé de Saint-Pierre.
José Maximo Pinto da Fonseca Rangel (1772-1832), a Portuguese writer and Freemason, took part in his country's patriotic resistance and liberal revolution in 1808-1820; he was secretary of the "Conselho Conservador de Lisboa", a secret Masonic organization created in 1808 to fight against Napoleon Bonaparte's occupation of Portugal.
No copy of this rare edition appears to be preserved in French public collections (not in the CCFr nor in the BnF computerized catalog).
