VIGNY (Alfred de). - Lot 233
VIGNY (Alfred de).
Les Consultations du Docteur-Noir. Stello ou Les Diables Bleus (Blue devils). Paris, Gosselin, Renduel, 1832. In-8, cherry calf, wide cold-stamped roulette surrounded by a triple gilt fillet and a bold black fillet, spine decorated with gilt roulettes and large black irons, green title and giblets, marbled edges, modern slipcase (period binding).
First edition, with 3 figures on chine by Tony Johannot, engraved by Brévière.
This indictment of bourgeois society was strongly influenced by the author's personal disappointments. The main theme of Gilbert's three stories, Chatterton and Chénier, is the poet's unjust fate in society. By placing Stello and the Docteur Noir in dialogue, Vigny contrasts two aspects of his own personality (cf. Alfred de Vigny, catalog de l'exposition à la Bibliothèque nationale, 1963, p. 44).
A choice copy in an elegant cherry calf binding. The quality binding is unsigned.
Engraved armorial bookplate of the Countess de Vaudreuil, wife of the Governor of the Louvre.
