FRANCE (Anatole). The Crainquebille Affair. Paris, Édouard Pelletan, 1901. In-4, black morocco, large incised leather inset on first board, four-ribbed spine with gold titling, interior gilt fillet, brown silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges, untrimmed, slipcase (Marius Michel). Original edition, with 63 compositions by Steinlen, printed in an edition of 400 copies. This is the most successful of Steinlen's illustrated books. Printed for Steinlen, one of 25 copies on old japon reprinted in in-4 format, containing a suite of illustrations on chine and including 3 original drawings by the artist. A superb copy, in a Marius Michel binding decorated on the first cover with a large incised leather by the artist, signed and dated 1922.
