Kota (musede) throwing knife, Gabon - Lot 275
Kota (musede) throwing knife, Gabon Iron, wood. L. 37 cm - l. 32 cm Kota (musede) throwing knife, Gabon Iron, wood. L. 14 9/16 in - W. 12 5/8 in 426 CH Rare and elegant Kota throwing knife, known as a musede, from Gabon. Complex, elaborate shape in the form of a hornbill's head. The extremely fine ironwork testifies to the exceptional technical mastery of Kota blacksmiths. The blade's central rib terminates in a triangular cut within the iron itself. The handle contrasts beautifully with the rest of the piece. Beautiful patina of use on the whole piece, a sign of its authenticity and age. Kota throwing knives, true feats of forging, were prestigious objects used in both warlike and ceremonial contexts. Symbols of status and power, they played an important role in Kota society. It's possible that this particular type of knife is a deviation from the throwing knife typology. Its use in the forest would have led to an adaptation of the shape. This remarkable piece, combining formal sophistication and cultural significance, is a precious testimony to the art of ironworking in Central Africa and to the richness of the Kota traditions of Gabon.
