Sinhalese kasthane sword - Lot 305
Sinhalese kasthane sword Sri Lanka, late 18th century. Iron, brass, gold L. 71 cm Sri Lanka, Late 18th century. Iron, brass, gold L. 28 in 1025 CH The hilt is typical of the Sinhalese style. Cast in two parts, it is finely chased with traditional Sinhalese motifs. The pommel is shaped like a large simha (lion) head. The handle, articulated with finger cut-outs, leads to a gilded copper octagonal ferrule. The cruise ends in a sérapé ?diya on one side, while on the other is a makara head, from which the branch emerges, which in turn ends in another sérapé ṅdiya head. On the front of the stirrup is a representation of Lakshmi, goddess of abundance and fortune, seated in lotus position and holding two branches of vegetation. Above the hilt, two makara heads emerge, their necks bringing their heads towards the base of the blade. The narrow, curved blade has a single gutter on each side, edged with a yellow metal alloy. The base of the blade is decorated with silver and brass plates.
