Rare Sinhalese knife - Lot 308
Rare Sinhalese knife Sri Lanka, 17th - 18th century Iron, silver, wood L. 31 cm - Gross weight: 387.7 g Unusual Sinhalese knife Sri Lanka, 17th - 18th century Iron, silver, wood L. 12 3/16 in - Weight: 13,7 oz 1053 CH A very rare and probably unique Sinhalese dagger. It features a broad, triangular, double-edged blade, mostly symmetrical except at the base. The junction between base and handle is silver-copper alloy, decorated with a sérapéṅdiya head and a representation of Lakshmi, goddess of abundance in Sinhalese tradition. These motifs are surrounded by floral spirals and scrolls typical of Sinhalese craftsmanship. The horn handle is carved in the shape of a makara with a wide open mouth, from which scrolls emerge. The wooden scabbard has a fluted top and is entirely covered in silver leaf, with bands decorated with fine filigree.
