Important double-bladed steel katar Vijayanagara Empire (India), late 16th-early 17th century L. 35 cm Important double-bladed steel katar Vijayanagara empire (India), late 16th - early 17th century L. 13 3/4 in 733 CH European-style 20 cm blade mounted on the fluted tail of an imposing South Indian mythical creature, known as a yali, generally used for spiritual protection, here acting as the weapon's handguard. It is depicted from the front, with fluted wings outstretched, legs and talons spread wide, rounded body and legs chiselled with scales, long neck terminating in the beast's head, gaping mouth with protruding teeth, all topped by a bulbous pommel. The second, 10 cm-long, curved blade fits a bichawa-type loop handle with bulbous pommel, and is attached to the back of the yali's guard. The yali's head and the back of the dagger bear traces of gold. Some repairs are visible on the yali's legs. For a similar example, see Elvis, The Hindu Warrior, 2020, p.282, cat.no.233.
