Gauntlet sword (pata) with Solingen blade and iron bracelet - Lot 334
Gauntlet sword (pata) with Solingen blade and iron bracelet India and Germany, 17th century L. 128 cm - Blade length 96 cm. A gauntlet sword (pata) with Solingen blade and iron wrist strap India and Germany, 17th century L. 50 3/8 in - L; of the blade 37 3/4 in 490 CH The gauntlet sword is of classical form and fitted with a European blade (firanghi). The sword features an orb and cross armorer's mark associated with Solingen, as well as an illegible inscription in Latin letters. While the central fields of the guard are left plain, the edges are chased with a delicate scrolling vine motif, and the guard is partially pierced at the edges. Traces of gilding remain on the hilt. The gauntlet sword has a long history in India. Its first mention seems to appear in the travel book of 14th-century traveller Ibn Battuta, who describes a weapon "resembling the scrap iron of the plough, into which the man inserts his hand so that it covers his forearm and extends over two cubits" (Ibn Battuta 2007, p. 554). The weapon is also illustrated in the Nujum al-'Ulum produced for Sultan 'Ali Adil Shah I in Bijapur (Robert Elgood, Hindu Arms and Ritual: Arms and Armour from India 1400-1865, Delft, 2004, p. 211). European blade marking with orb and cross (worn). Visible use-related repairs on the inside.
