Rare dagger with a gilt pommel with a yali head and a curved - Lot 341
Rare dagger with a gilt pommel with a yali head and a curved steel blade Probably Tanjore, South India, 17th century L. 41 cm - Gross weight: 500.4 g A rare dagger with a silver-gilt yali head pommel and recurved steel blade Possibly Tanjore, South India, 17th century L. 16 1/8 in - Weight: 17,6 oz 731 CH Exhibition and publication : - Howard Ricketts, Philippe Missillie, Splendeur des Armes Orientales, Paris, 1988, p.79, n°124, ill. The blade, whose flat splint is unadorned, is chased with two deep gutters that converge at the base of a long, bulging point. The silver guard, with a wooden core, features an elliptical beaded and gilded shell that is extended on one side by a capuce, enhanced by a band of gilding, with a drooping finial. The central handle is chased at the base with stylized clouds or jewels and features a faceted spindle with a partially gilded pommel in the shape of a humanoid creature resembling a yali. Blade length: 29 cm This dagger is published by Ricketts and Missillier (1988), alongside another (p.79, cat.no.125, current location unknown), the other with a blade typical of Tanjore daggers, so it is possible that this example also comes from this or a neighboring region. Some light pitting on the blade. Slight scratches on the hilt, wear to the gilding.
