Beautiful tempered steel armguard (bazuband) Probably Rajasthan, 18th century L. 34 cm A fine watered steel arm guard (bazuband) Probably Rajasthan, 18th century L. 13 3/8 in 1047 CH The arm guard retains its original wrist guard, secured by two hinges decorated with fleur-de-lys. The hilt is finely overlaid with gold in a floral border, flanked by two thin bands of a repeated square cross motif. The main fields of the guard are decorated with a simple chased motif featuring half-palmettes. This armguard is part of a group of closely comparable pieces of armor, traditionally attributed to a single Rajasthani workshop. Rajasthan, characterized by the use of chased (half-)palmettes in the central field and a gold floral motif superimposed along the edges. This decorative repertoire is also found on the arm guards of a chilta hazar masha set from the Wallace Collection (inv. no. OA1534), attributed to 18th-century Rajasthan (Guy Laking, Oriental Arms and Armour, London, 1914, pp. 37, 85). Another pair of armguards potentially from this workshop is now in the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, Jaipur (inv. nos. MJM 13.1111 and MJM 13.1112, Robert Elgood, Arms & Armour: The Royal Collection at the Jaipur City Palace, 2015, 188-189). The original lining is missing. Minor loss of gold.
