Iron mace with rim - Lot 364
Iron mace with rim Probably Bijapur, Karnataka, 17th century L. 74 cm A flanged iron mace Probably Bijapur, Karnataka, 17th century L. 29 in 501 CH Provenance : - Probus Stockholm, 24 April 2017, lot 41 The head of the mace is formed by eight edges. The handle is worked with a herringbone pattern. The shape of the handle, which closely resembles early versions of the type of sword handle known as the basket handle, is identified by Robert Elgood as a transitional form between early Hindu forms and the "true" basket handles attributable to the late 16th and early 17th centuries (Robert Elgood, Hindu Arms and Ritual: Arms and Armour from Inda 1400- 1865, Delft, p.188). This mass is closely comparable to the one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. No. 36.25.1903), formerly part of the Stone Collection.
