Ox-cutter sword with curved steel blade and iron basket-guar - Lot 374
Ox-cutter sword with curved steel blade and iron basket-guard handle India, 18th century L. 79cm Ox-cutter sword with steel recurved blade and iron basket-hilt India, 18th century L. 31 1/8 in 508 CH A large, heavy sword, colloquially known as an ox-cutter due to the idea that it was used to decapitate oxen for religious sacrifices. The striking, curved blade features a prominent belly and T-shaped back. It is mounted on a basket-guard handle with pierced edges and a long pommel point. An early repair to the hilt suggests actual use, a leather and cloth lining on the hilt.
