Mughal rock crystal dagger handle - Lot 384
Mughal rock crystal dagger handle India, 17th century L. 15 cm Mughal dagger handle of rock crystal India, 17th century 1139 CH Provenance : - Sotheby's New York, March 21, 2002, n°193 Mughal rock crystal pistol grip of excellent clarity, finely carved on both sides with irises and multi-petaled flowers among creepers and leafy tendrils. The end of the pommel is also adorned with an iris from which a pinnate leaf emerges. An unpolished stump protrudes from the lower part of the handle and is designed to fit into a socket attached to a blade ricasso, to prevent an unsightly blade tang from penetrating the rock crystal handle, spoiling the transparent aesthetic. A similar rock-crystal hilt is currently on display in "The Great Mughals" exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum (closing May 5, 2025), V&A accession no.1664-1882. Large inclusion in the lower part. Large chip on base.
