Steel chamfer with traces of gold and Saint Irene seal - Lot 461
Steel chamfer with traces of gold and Saint Irene seal Ottoman Empire, 16th century H. 48.5 cm Steel chamfron with traces of gold and the stamp of St Irene Ottoman, 16th century H. 19 in 558 CH The square-shaped forehead features a molded, raised T-shaped projection, connected to a ridge that follows the midline of the face, thickening at three points to form lozenges, the first of which is intersected by a U-shaped molding, itself connected to the ridges that form the cheeks of the face. The flattened protrusions and the two lower corner panels are adorned with chiseled interlacing motifs, inspired by earlier Seljuk motifs. A curved steel plate above the T-molding is missing (see David Collection 3/1979 for a complete example). The edges are carefully pierced with a series of perforations for attaching linings, cheekpieces or other elements of the horse's defensive harness. Traces of gold are visible on the surface, which has a dark patina. The stamp of Istanbul's Saint Irene arsenal is in the center, below the T-shaped protrusion. The T-shaped ridge places this chamfer in a small group including the one mentioned in Copenhagen, but the complex arrangement of ridges is closest to an example in the Met Museum (21.102.4). Visor missing, surface shows dark patina with pitting. The rear surface has a dark patina and rust. A few chips, dents and broken holes around the edges. 19 cm at widest point.
