CATALOG CORRECTION : Ceremonial mace in gilded metal Transylvania, late 16th century L. 75 cm - Head diameter: 10 mm Gold metal ceremonial mace Transylvania, late 16th century L. 29 1/2 in 335 CH Featuring a gilded metal-covered wooden core in three different styles, the bulbous head is divided into cabochon-centered lozenges on a scrolled base, topped by a cap featuring a band of stylized leaves and a rounded apple. The shaft is divided into five parts, three of which are adorned with spiral scrolls and two with facets. This ceremonial mace, with its shape and triple motif decoration, appears to be closely related to the one in the Rüstkammer, Staatliche Kunstammlungen Dresden, Inv.no.Y379, which was a gift to Elector Christian II of Saxony from Imperial Commander Giorgio Basta in 1607 (see Schuckelt, The Turkish Chamber, 2010, p.56-57).
