*Sword (kilij) with damascened steel blade, rhinoceros horn - Lot 481
*Sword (kilij) with damascened steel blade, rhinoceros horn and vermeil handle, and leather scabbard with vermeil mounting Signed Musa Qarimi, Istanbul, Ottoman Empire, early 19th century L. 96 cm with scabbard A sabre (kilij) with watered steel blade, silver-gilt and rhino horn hilt, and leather scabbard with silver-gilt mounts Signed Musa Qarimi, Istanbul, Ottoman Turkey, early 19th century L. 37.8 in in scabbard 1 CH On one side, the fine damascened steel blade is inlaid with gold with three simple cartouches containing the inscriptions: "There is no hero but 'Ali, no sword but Dhu'l-Faqar", spread over the upper and lower oblong cartouches, and "Halqa-dar (the Obedient) of Istanbul. Work of Musa Qirimi" (halqadar-i islambul 'amal-i musa qirimi) in the central medallion. The other side is chased, with a simple rumi motif on a textured gold background. The blade measures 78.5 cm in length. Like lot 920, this sword belongs to a group of swords characterized by the extensive use of chased steel on high-quality damascened blades. This sword is signed by one of its most illustrious exponents, Musa Qirimi ("the Criméan"), and also indicates that it was made in Istanbul. Another sword made by Musa Qirimi was exhibited at Veste Coburg in 2024 (Bernd Augustin and Marcus Pilz, Gold & Damascus Steel: The Ottoman Art of Bladesmithing, 2024, pp. 194-195).
