Dan mask - Lot 9
Dan mask Ivory Coast Wood and wax H. 24 cm Provenance: Former private collection, France: - Former private collection, France. This racing mask, called Gunyege, can be identified by its large round eyes, which allow the wearer to have a clear view. It was used in ceremonies dedicated to illustrating the warrior valor of men during the dry season. The broad, rounded forehead forms an arc, while the lower part of the face closes at the chin. Finely incised eyebrows meet at the base of a pointed nose with well-defined wings. The half-open mouth with its full lips forms a wide diamond shape. The marked contrast between shapes and volumes, underlined by the dark patina with its shimmering reflections, gives this mask a remarkable intensity.
