Gabon
Wood and kaolin
H. 29 cm
Provenance:
- Bonhams, San Francisco, December 6, 2004, Native American, Pre-Columbian and Tribal Art, lot 142
Beautiful Vuvi mask depicting the face of a revenant (moghondz,i), set in a mandorla. The eyebrows, formed by two harmonious curves, and the flat, triangular nose are characteristic of this region.
This type of mask was used in dance ceremonies called mukuyi or mukuji.
Symmetry, soft colors and harmonious shapes make this mask a fine example of Vuvi sculpture.
It was originally accompanied by a raffia hairpiece.
