Swazi neck rest Swaziland, South Africa Wood L. 41 cm Provenance : - André Schoeller Collection, Paris, France - Gianluca Spinosa Collection, Italy This beautiful neck-rest, whose shape evokes a stylized bovid, is composed of a cylindrical lintel animated by a central pendant and two slightly flared "legs" engraved with broad vertical striations. According to Hélène Joubert and Manuel Valentin (Ubuntu: Arts et Cultures d'Afrique du Sud, RMN, 2002), the vertical striations recall the isidwaba, a leather skirt worn by married women.
