Wooden and cardboard box, lid opening into two flaps each decorated with a color lithograph (full-length portraits of Charlemagne and Napoleon), embossed frames. Beautiful game for learning French history, with elements to be assembled to form the historical gallery. Interior divided into three parts, including : - a booklet entitled Simples récits dédiés au jeune âge. Histoire de France racontée en famille. Second edition (Paris, Gautier frères, s.d.) (2 in-12 paperback volumes, 139 and 154 pp.). - a sheet for the Formule de questions faites par l'interprète. - a booklet entitled Pénitences: 33 readings to be distributed among the losers. Instructive and amusing description of the 125 paintings making up the two galleries (one volume, in-12 paperback, 8 leaves). - 18 boards with color lithographs (188 x 102 mm) depicting 125 subjects (portraits of the kings of France, up to Louis-Philippe, and historical scenes). - 124 small cards giving the names of the kings and historical scenes (nos. 1 to 125, with nos. 66-67 on the same card). - green paper frieze with numbers printed on the sides. - 3 grooved wooden supports. - 4 metal rods with eyelets. - a "pawn" representing a group of three characters, lithographed in color and mounted on a small wooden stand with wheels. - 3 large lithographed and cut-out fronts, with notches. - 3 other front elements. The attractive box bears the label of Alphonse Giroux, a leading 19th-century Paris manufacturer of furniture, luxury accessories, novelties and toys. Mottling and foxing in one of the booklets. Some spotting inside the box. Small loss to a wooden support, and a small broken piece glued to the same. Traces of use.
