MUSICAL BOOK OBJECT. - The Speaking Picture Book. A New Picture Book with Characteristical Voices. Germany, n.d. [ca. 1890]. Red percaline book-box, illustrated front cover (32 x 24 x 6.5 cm). Charming musical book-object, adorned with 9 chromolithographs: a large one on the first cover depicting three young children and a woman seated around a table, playing with a similar book, and 8 full-page ones showing mainly animals in their natural environment or with children (rooster, donkey, lamb, birds, cow, cuckoo and goat, and children joyfully greeting their parents). When the 9 little strings on the side edge are pulled, connected to bellows in the sound box under the book, the animals' cries can be heard. Small tear to covers, otherwise in good condition and working well.
