BAYLE (Pierre). Mémoires pour servir à l'Histoire de la Magi - Lot 138
BAYLE (Pierre). Mémoires pour servir à l'Histoire de la Magie, des revenans et autres niaiseries, des contes de mies. 1704. In-12, spotted brown hardback, long handwritten label on spine, untrimmed (Binding circa 1800). A copy of the bibliophile François-Louis Jamet (1710-1778) who, under this handwritten title, produced a volume responding to the subject from a copy of Bayle's Réponses aux questions d'un provincial, dismembering it and binding it as follows: (pp. 278 to 328, pp. 1 to 106 plus a handwritten leaf, pp. 165 to 206 and a handwritten page), these passages relating to magic. He concludes his volume with a few anas on magic and the devil (title and 12 handwritten pages). At the head, a handwritten table of the 17 chapters of the collection (6 pages). As usual, Jamet has enriched his volume with engravings (a portrait and 9 engravings) and interspersed the text with numerous annotations. This curious collection comes from the library of Baron Pichon (II, 1898, no. 2069). A note on Jamet occupies the first flyleaf.
