DANEAU (Lambert). Two new treatises, very useful for this ti - Lot 142
DANEAU (Lambert). Two new treatises, very useful for this time. Le premier touchant les Sorciers [...]. Le second contient une brève remonstrance sur les jeux de Cartes & de Dez. S.l. [Geneva], By Jacques Baumet, 1579. In-8, green morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, interior roulette, gilt edges (Koehler). Partly first edition of this work originally published in 1574 under the title Les Sorciers, here revised and enlarged with a "remonstrance" on games of fate. A rare work by Lambert Daneau (1630-1595), one of the most learned theologians of the 16th century (Caillet), born in Beaugeney (Loiret) and successively minister in Gien, Orthez and Castres, where he died. In this text, he admits the existence of sorcerers and gives advice on how to protect oneself from their evil spells. (GLN-2729; Caillet, n°2778; Guaïta, n°205, for a copy in antique red morocco). A label affixed to one of the endpapers bears this handwritten note: acheté à M. de Guaïta 80 fr., selon lui le plus rare de tous les ouvrages de sorcellerie. There are only three or four copies, and they are always the same ones that come up for sale. The copy appeared in the sales catalog of the Lyon bibliophile Léon Cailhava (1845, no. 80). From the libraries of the Marquis de Biencourt and Biencourt-Poncins, with bookplates. Some foxing. Small paper loss at bottom corner of H1 leaf, with no loss of text.
