PAGNINO (Santes).
[1529]. Large folio volume, brown calf, central coat of arms, ornate spine, red edges (Binding circa 1700). First edition of the first Latin-Hebrew dictionary, a major work by Santes Pagnino (1470-1541), a scholar from Lucca, protégé of Pope Leo X and one of Savonarola's disciples (Baudrier, t. VIII, p. 52; Lyse Schwarzfuchs, L'Hébreu dans le livre lyonnais au XVIe siècle, n°21.) "Published with the support of the Genoese humanist Federico Fregoso (1480-1541), to whom it is dedicated, this book is the first Latin-Hebrew dictionary of Hebrew verbal roots ever printed" (Élodie Attia, "Aux origines du Thesaurus Linguae Sanctae de Pagnini (Lyon, 1529)" in Bibliothèque d'humanisme et de Renaissance, Droz, LXXIX, 2017, n°2, pp. 343-363). Superb typographical edition, with a title set in a large frame of historiated scenes and a handsome ornate alphabet. A copy bearing the arms of Jacques-Nicolas Colbert (1655-1707), second son of the great Colbert and Archbishop of Rouen from 1691 to his death. The title is soiled and lined, and the last leaf is missing, which bears a colophon. Spine rebound.
