VIRGILE. Opera virgiliana. S.l.n.n. [Lyon, Jean Crespin], 15 - Lot 260
VIRGILE. Opera virgiliana. S.l.n.n. [Lyon, Jean Crespin], 1529. 3 parts in one large folio volume, cold-stamped saddle-skin, remains of clasps (contemporary binding).
Superb edition published by the humanist and publisher Josse Bade, with Virgil's text in the center and the commentaries arranged in small Roman type around it. (Baudrier, t. XII, p. 345; Brun, p. 312; Mortimer, French books, n°538.)
Remarkable illustration of just over 200 woodcuts in the text: this is taken from the Lyon edition given by Jacques Sacon in 1517, itself copied from the Strasbourg edition printed by Grüninger in 1502. The general title, printed in red and black, is set in an elegant woodcut frame, decorated with foliage and putti.
Old handwritten bookplate on title: Pro Schola Ursinensi.
Some internal stains and defects, some figures have been redacted. Worn binding with scuff marks on the second cover. Volume detached from spine, last quire detached.
CORRECTION TO THE CATALOGUE: PAGES 300 AND 301 ARE COMPLETELY BURNT BY THE SUN, PAPER MISSING AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT OF PAGE 301.
