Saint prelate on throne
Enameled medallion in low cut, translucent enamel on silver
D. 4.4 cm
This circular medallion, bordered by a frieze of palmettes with days, features a holy prelate, bishop or founding abbot, enthroned beneath a tiered architecture, surrounded in part by an opaque red border with reserved crosslets. The saint, seated three-quarter on a bench, is enthroned, holding a pastoral crozier and a closed book.
It can be compared with several works by the Sienese artist Guccio di Mannaia, such as a medallion featuring Saint Catherine in the Vatican Museum, or the enamels adorning a chalice in the treasury of the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi.
