Romanesque modillon - Lot 11
Romanesque modillon Male head Limestone Ile de France or Picardy, 12th century H. 16 cm - W. 19 cm - D. 18 cm Provenance - Charles Ratton (no label) This console modillion features a high-relief head with long hair, beard and striated moustache. The mouth is tilted sharply to the right, and the right eye is closed, clearly suggesting facial hemiplegia - an exceptional medieval depiction of an identifiable pathology. A study of the stone by Madame Annie Blanc concluded that it came from quarries in the Oise region around Saint-Maximin and Senlis.
