Alexander the Great Marble head Italy or France, 17th century H. 43 cm - W. 36 cm - D. 34 cm This large white marble head was probably inserted into a colored marble bust. Alexander the Great is represented according to antique copies of an original by Lysippus. The accentuated upward-twisting movement, eyes to the sky, a style known as "serpentinata", common in Hellenistic models, had a strong influence on representations of the Baroque period. Many of Europe's royal collections included busts of Alexander in the 17th century.
