Eskimo, Thule culture, Alaska - Lot 52
Eskimo, Thule culture, Alaska 19th century or earlier Walrus tusk (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) with inlays (minor missing), and a very nice patina from age and use. L. 42 cm Provenance: - Charles Ratton (no label) Scepter or tool of very fine craftsmanship. Although its function is undefined, the finesse of the workmanship and the arrangement of the rich decoration suggest a ceremonial or sacred object. However, the essential shape of the object suggests that it was used to smooth and flatten seams. The carefully incised decoration is composed of nucleated circles with inlaid centers. The circles, the largest of which are concentric, are each adorned with four equidistant incised lugs. These motifs form a symmetrical pattern reproduced on both sides.
