8 issues: [REVUE]. POEDJANGGA BAROE [NEW WRITER], Batavia (Jakarta). Nos. 7, 3, 6/1935, 3, 4-5-6/1938, 7, 8, 4/1941, between 23.2 x 15.5 cm and 24.5 x 16 cm, stapled. Poedjangga Baroe, Indonesian avant-garde literary magazine, published from July 1933 to February 1942 and founded by Armijn Pane, Amir Hamzah and Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana. From the beginning of the 20th century, the indigenous populations of the Dutch East Indies became increasingly nationalistic, as evidenced by the creation of several publications. Armijn, Hamzah and Alisjahbana, three writers from Sumatra, laid the foundations of their magazine in September 1932, and, lacking sufficient support, decided to self-publish. The magazine first appeared in July 1933. As publication progressed, it attracted more and more politically committed personalities. After the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies in 1942, publication ceased. Ideologically, Poedjangga Baroe defended the idea of a modern, united nation, speaking a single language, Indonesian. However, the diverse cultural and political views of its contributors gave the publication an undefined, neutral political orientation, with articles covering a wide range of aspects of the political spectrum. On the cultural front, it published polemical debates on the right balance between Westernization and tradition, necessary for the country's development. During its nine years of existence, the magazine published ninety issues, including over three hundred poems, five plays, three poetry collections, a novel, numerous essays and several short stories. The magazine, which never had more than 150 paying subscribers, met with mixed reactions. Young writers praised its contemporary echo, while Malay traditionalists denounced its alleged distortion of the Malay language. Although most of his works have now been forgotten, the themes and styles common to the period 1933-1942 have led critics to refer to this period as the "POEDJANGGA BAROE generation" of Indonesian literature.
