A grisaille and silver-yellow rondel depicting a Christ scen - Lot 35
A grisaille and silver-yellow rondel depicting a Christ scene: Christ stands holding a platter of communion wafers, which he is bringing to a table where Saint John, the Virgin Mary, Saint Peter, and two other apostles are seated; in the background, the martyrdom of a saint and a woman kneeling in prayer. Inscription in Gothic letters at the top quoting Psalm 66:12: “We have passed through fire and water, and you have brought us to a place of refreshment.” ("We have passed through fire and water; and you have finally led us to a place of refreshment"). Early 16th century H. 23.5 cm (cropped) This may depict the banquet of the elect in Paradise, to whom Christ presents the Eucharist, in reference to John 6:51: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give so that the world may have life." The inscription appearing in the upper part of the medallion thus likely refers to the trials endured by the elect before their attainment of Salvation. It is likely that this medallion adorned a stained-glass window in a house belonging to a Reformed Protestant, as the psalms that were sung held a special place from the very founding of French Protestantism.
