WOODCUT (41 x 31 cm) from *Tableaux accomplis de tous les ar - Lot 28
WOODCUT (41 x 31 cm) from *Tableaux accomplis de tous les arts libéraux* by Christophe de Savigny (Paris: de Gourmont, 1587), depicting the author presenting his book to Louis de Gonzague, Duke of Nevers. Cut flush with the square outline, with no text on the reverse. A famous engraving, a masterpiece of French woodcut art. It is executed with vigor and expressiveness [...], as the artist sought to reproduce a tapestry adorned with the prince’s highly intricate coat of arms. This beautiful work had been attributed by Papillon to Jean Cousin, but it seems more logical to attribute it to J. de Gourmont, who may have engraved it based on a drawing by the painter Nicolas Hilliard (Brun, p. 290).
