INCUNABULUM. — LATIN BIBLE. No place, no date [Paris, Ulrich - Lot 40
INCUNABULUM. — LATIN BIBLE. No place, no date [Paris, Ulrich Gering, Martin Cranz, and Michael Friburger, between July 1476 and July 1477]. Folio size, brown half-basane, leather-covered boards, cold-stamped border decoration adorned with fillets and a wide roulette (modern binding). The first Bible printed in France. It was published in two volumes by three German-born partner printers—one of their typographical masterpieces—in their Parisian workshop, Au Soleil d’or; indeed, it is in this incunabulum that the name of this shop sign is mentioned for the first time: [...] in vico jacobi sol aureus offert. (GW, 4225; HC, 3058; Goff, B550; Claudin, vol. I, p. 75.) A remarkable two-column print in rounded Gothic type. The GW lists only 29 copies of this precious incunabulum in institutional collections. A fragmentary copy of the second volume, bound at the time, comprising 122 folios (out of 268), that is, the second half and the end of the volume: it likely contains the complete text of the Apocalypse of Saint John (97 ff.), plus 25 ff. for the *Interpretationes hebraicorum nominum* (A10 B10 C5). The first volume is missing. The lower part of the last text leaf is doubled. Minor restoration on the last 8 leaves, which are soiled. A ring of mold in the lower margin of a few leaves; some faint water stains.
