INDIA, Arunachal Pradesh A carved wooden Monpa mask with a dark patina, depicting a monkey with a goiter; its face is deeply wrinkled with folds, and its mouth is stretched into a wide, ear-to-ear smile revealing fangs. A piece of leather attached to the top of the skull was likely intended to represent a fleece. H. 21 cm A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck. It is often caused by a lack of iodine, which was common in mountainous regions.
