RETZ, Jean-François Paul de Gondi, cardinal de - Lot 58
RETZ, Jean-François Paul de Gondi, cardinal de Memoirs, containing what happened in France during the first years of the reign of Louis XIV. New edition revised exactly, increased of several historical clarifications and some pieces of the Cardinal de Retz and others, serving for the history of this time there. In Amsterdam, Chez J. Frédéric Bernard, 1731. 4 volumes in-8 (160 x 95 mm). Red morocco, triple gilt fillet around the boards, very ornate ribbed spine, gilt fillet on the edges, interior roulette, gilt edges on marbling (Lortic). DEFINITIVE EDITION "MORE COMPLETE THAN THE PREVIOUS AND THE BEST THAT WAS GIVEN IN THE XVIIIth CENTURY" (Tchemerzine, IX, 396-397). It is adorned with the beautiful portrait of Retz engraved in intaglio by Thomassin. "The Memoirs abound in maxims which are true today as in 1640, maxims as deep, as bold as those of Machiavelli and stronger because more concrete... No man of his time was a greater historian, none understood as he did the disorder of the royal political machine at the time of the minority of Louis XIV, none knew better how to penetrate and paint not only the principal actors of the Fronde but the politicians of all times" (André Maurois). "This is the most sought-after edition of these Memoirs; one can hardly find beautiful copies" (Quérard) Superb copy perfectly established by Lortic. Some leaves of volume IV slightly browned.
